Christian Outreach is About God, Not Us

God provided for the salvation of the world through Jesus' death on the cross. God is the One who seeks and saves (Luke 19:10), revealing Himself to people (Matt. 11:27; 16:15-17) and drawing people to Himself (John 6:44).

If God did not do the seeking, saving, revealing, and drawing of people to Himself, all of our outreach efforts would be meaningless and fruitless.

God initiates the outreach process by . . .
assuring people of the reality of His love, so people can feel and experience for themselves
answering their doubts, so people can know and believe
awakening their faith, so people hear and respond as "faith comes by hearing"
authenticating His message of reconciliation, so people see and become accountable

God uses believers in the process as . . .
we go to God on their behalf
intercessory prayer, standing in the gap

"I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone . . . This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of truth" (1 Tim. 2:1-4).

Before connecting people with God, connect with God about people. And, continue to connect with God about people throughout the whole process. Why? -- Because it is Biblical. Because it works. Because it demonstrates love. Because outreach is about God.

God made us His royal priesthood and so it is our priestly duty. (1 Peter 2:5,9; Rev. 1:6)
God set the precedent through Biblical models and so we should do likewise. (Gen. 18:23-32 - Abraham; Ex. 32:7-14, 31-32 - Moses; I Kings 18:36-37 - Elijah; and others, including Jesus)
God's desire is for people to be saved and so we pray for His will to be done. (Ezek. 33:11; Lk. 19:10; 1 Tim. 2:3-4; 2 Pet. 3:9; Matt. 6:10)
God has an enemy, Satan, who does not want His will to be done and so we need to submit ourselves to God and stand in His power and authority over the enemy. (Lk. 8:11-12; Jn. 12:31-32; 14:30; 16:11; Eph. 6:10-18; James 4:7-10; Rev. 12:9)
God looks for people to stand in the gap and so we should be available to Him. (Ps. 106:23; Isa. 59:16; Ezek. 22:30-31)
God works through prayer and so it only makes sense for prayer to be an integral part of any outreach effort. (James 5:16-18)

We are to pray for all people because "God wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." Other issues related to outreach merit our prayers as well. Pray

that the Lord of the harvest would send forth laborers (Matt. 9:36-38)
that we would have boldness and clarity in sharing the Gospel (Eph. 6:18-20; Col. 4:4)
that doors would open (Rom. 15:30-32; Col. 4:3; 2 Thess. 3:1-2)
that God's protection would be upon us as we spread the message of the Gospel (2 Thess. 3:1-3)

The Command in the Great Commission:

We go to people as His ambassadors
missions, one-on-one witnessing, visitation, door-to-door, church planting, etc.

The Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20 tells us to GO.
It does not say "bring them and make disciples."
Nor does it say that we are to urge them to "come and see" but rather to GO.
The words "come and see" were spoken to those who were already His disciples to confirm that Jesus was no longer in the tomb but risen from the dead.
The command, however, is not so much to go but to make disciples.

"While you are going, make disciples," Jesus was telling them. They were gathered there with Jesus but soon would be going. As they were going, they would undoubtedly meet many people along the way who needed Jesus. They were to invest into their lives.

How are we investing our lives when we go out from times of worship and edification? Is the Great Commission a part of our lifestyle?

The Context of the Great Commission:

The disciples had been gathered together just prior to Jesus' ascension worshiping Jesus. Some in their midst doubted. They were having a hard time getting beyond the cross and beyond the grave to the resurrection.

Possibly these doubters were the ones who most needed to hear Jesus' assertion of "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." This authority gave Him power over death.

The next words Jesus spoke, "Therefore go," must be kept in context. It is as though Jesus is saying that the time to "come and see" is over. Jesus triumphed over death. If you believe it, GO and make disciples.

How impacted are we by His ability to change lives for eternity? If we truly believe it, what more motivation do we need to be involved in outreach?

The Promise in the Great Commission:

His authority was all encompassing ... "all authority in heaven and on earth." Nothing could hold Him down.

Then comes the assurance that the resurrected Jesus would be with them as they go and make disciples ... "And surely I am with you, always, to the very end of the age."

What greater assurance did they need? They could get out of their comfort zones and go be His witnesses not only "in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria," but even "to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

Where is the power in our outreach efforts? Do we have the confidence and boldness that comes through knowing His presence in our lives?

The Objective of the Great Commission:

Notice that the command was to "go and make disciples" not simply to "go and tell" others about Jesus.

The Great Commission takes people beyond walking an aisle, praying to receive Jesus, and saying they believe. The Great Commission takes people to the point of publicly identifying with Jesus ("baptizing them") and learning to let Him be Lord of their everyday lives and not simply their Savior ("teaching them to obey").

Where is the follow-up in our outreach efforts? Are we ready to bring in the harvest?

The Outreach Ministry Manual includes this content along with some Scripture and further reflection on the Great Commission to help us better understand what outreach is and what it is not.

God uses Christians in the outreach process to help . . .
assure people of His love through compassion
benevolence, community outreach
answer people's doubts through correction of misconceptions
apologetics
awaken people's faith through communication of God's Word
preaching and proclaiming (crusades, open air), teaching (one-on-one, neighborhood Bible studies)
authenticate the message by characterization through reflection
lifestyle evangelism

Outreach Ministry is about turning the spotlight on Jesus. As His ambassadors we work in cooperation with God by showcasing Him through our lives and through our words. We can use a variety of means but the objective should always remain the same to help others see Him better, not us

God's Mission for the Church -- The Great Commission
The Great Commission that Jesus gave His apostles consisted of Two parts:
1. To preach the gospel to everyone (Mark 16:15,16)
2. To make disciples, baptize them, and then teach them all that Jesus taught (Matt.28:29,20)

Jesus' words in Matthew 28:18-20 have come to be known as the Great Commission.
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

As a church leader, part of your responsibility is to support and promote God's mission for the church. All believers should obey the Great Commission as nowhere do we read of it being solely a leader's or missionary's responsibility. The intent of this site, however, is to look at the Great Commission from a leadership perspective to learn some essentials about being a leader.

Cradle of Authority Seen in the Great Commission

Jesus said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." Too often we exclude the eighteenth verse of Matthew 28 from a recitation of the Great Commission but these words are vital to a proper understanding of the church's mission. We go out in His power and authority, not our own.

If church leaders don't get this issue of authority settled, they might hinder the Body from doing their part in fulfilling the Great Commission.

a) feel my position as a leader gives me authority
b) find myself picking and choosing what I put under His authority and what I hold in control

Charge of Responsibility Given in the Great Commission

Jesus exhorted His disciples to make disciples. Notice the qualifying factors.
"Go and make disciples." - While you are going (whatever you do, wherever you go), make Christ-followers. ... Be proactive or intentional in this at all times.
"Make disciples of all nations." - Think big when it comes to making disciples (all). ... Be outward focused, always looking at the big picture.

How seriously you take this charge will be seen in how much you steer the church toward these qualifying factors.
I don't see outreach as my primary responsibility. Other people are more qualified to make disciples.

Evangelism is almost an obsession. Everything I do is about making disciples.

Center of Focus
Throughout the entire discipleship process, attention should go to the Lord. The Great Commission takes people beyond salvation in the Lord Jesus to: publically identifying with God ("baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit")

people's identity needs to be found in God, not the leader or church. Their allegiance belongs to Him, not a person or organization. Anything we do to help people identify with Him needs to be done in His name, not in our name.

learning to let Him be Lord and not simply Savior ("teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you")

People's ultimate accountability is to the Lord, to not only know what He commands but to do it ... obey everything. He is the standard, the source of authority ... what He commanded. A leader's goal should be to transfer any dependence off of themselves and onto the Lord.

Case for Confidence Found in the Great Commission

How easily insecurities can set in as we seek to reach out and disciple others. Leaders are not exempt from fear of failure, concerns about what people will think, and other uncertainties about the process. Fears and insecurities do not have to immobilize if we pay careful attention to the reason we can move forward with confidence to fulfill the Great Commission. -- Jesus said, "surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

But, why is it called the “Great” Commission?

Perhaps it is great in the sense of how it is so comprehensive. Disciples are to be made of “all” nations. Disciples are to be taught “everything” He commanded — taking people from salvation to becoming fully devoted followers of Jesus. And, the command is apparently in effect until the “very end of the age” as He promised to be with us as we go and make disciples for that duration.

Perhaps it is great in the sense of how it is to permeate all facets of our lives. The command to “go” and make disciples suggests that it is something that is a part of our everyday lives as individuals, not just “church life.” Yet, it is should be permeating what we do as a church as well. In the Train Church Leaders Practicum we have been looking at how the Great Commission affects all aspects of church life. Click on the following links to articles written to date.

Are you a disciple of Jesus today?  You too have a responsibility to fulfill Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples.”

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15)

And I saw another angel flying in mid-heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those dwelling on the earth, even to every nation and kindred and tongue and people,
saying with a great voice, Fear God and give glory to Him! For the hour of His judgment has come. And worship Him who made the heaven and the earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
And another angel followed, saying, The great city, Babylon, has fallen, has fallen; because of the wine of the anger of her fornication; she has made all nations to drink.
And a third angel followed them, saying with a great voice, If anyone worships the beast and its image, and receives a mark in his forehead or in his hand,
he also will drink of the wine of the anger of God, having been mixed undiluted in the cup of His wrath. And he will be tormented by fire and brimstone before the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb.
And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. And they have no rest day or night, those who worship the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.
Here is the patience of the saints. Here are the ones who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
(Revelation 14:6-12)

YOUR CONFESSION OF IDENTIFICATION

The following Confession of Identification is a confession of who you are in Christ Jesus,

I am a BELIEVER in Jesus Christ. I believe that the Word of God is true and that every promise in the Bible belongs to me. The Bible says, that I am a child of the
most highGod . That I am an heir of God, joint-heir with Jesus Christ, The Bible says, because I am a believer, that I am the head and not the tail, that I am from above and not from beneath, that I am blessed as I go out, as I come in, as I sit down, as I arise, as I walk in the way. The blessing of God shall overtakeme, because I am a believer

When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the
Lord will lift up a standard against him, for He that is within me is greater than he that is in the world.

I am being changed from glory to glory by the Holy Spirit - old things are passed away, and the new life is in bloom, Because I am a believer, the Bible says, that I am the righteousness of God, in Christ Jesus. That I am what I am by the grace of God.

Thanks
be to God, who always causes me to triumph in Christ Jesus - I am hidden with Christ in God, Satan can not touch me as I remain in my safe hiding place, because I am a believer.

Thanks be to God who gives me the victory - in all things I am more than a conqueror. If God
be for me who can be against me. YES, I am hidden with Christ in God, safe and secure in Him. To know God is to love Him. Praise the Lord, "In Him I live and move and have My being." AMEN!

Believers Are "Salt of the earth and Light of the world"

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.(Matthew 5:13)  As salt enhances flavor and prevents decay so, by our very presence we should bring a sense of well being to those around us and prevent the advancement of moral decay.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
Light dispels darkness so as we reflect the life, love and character of Jesus we help to open the way for others to get to know Him and so bring hope.

Will you let your light shine? Will you help spread the gospel of Christ? Are you called to help spread the gospel of Christ? The Harvest Mission is of ministries that are lighting up more candles worldwide through restoration, revival, and renewal!

Many dies in darkness, unconnected to the love and grace of Christ. The purpose of this mission is to raise up Christian disciples who share the love of God and reach the ends of the earth for Christ.

"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you." (Isa 60:1)

What's the Gospel? The Gospel is the good news that God is restoring broken lives through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  "And I saw another angel fly in the middle of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people. (Rev 14:6) And its great burden is to call people everywhere back to faith in the one true Creator God, who made all things in heaven and earth. The Lord Jesus Christ must be accepted, first of all, as God and Creator, before it can be meaningful to present Him as Savior and Lord. The true gospel must present Christ as the sin-bearing, crucified, resurrected Savior (1 Corinthians 15:1-4), and as the coming King of kings and Lord of lords (Matthew 4:23; Revelation 19:16). Its burden is also JUDGMENT. "Fear God, and give glory to Him: for the Hour of His Judgment is come" It is to all the inhabitants of earth, who are passing through the "fires of Judgment," Then only, like the angel, do we truly proclaim the everlasting gospel.

The world is crying out for help, while the Lord is seeking men and women to stand in the gap.

Jesus is calling you for His vineyard, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us (Isaiah 6:8) Will you be the one? Can you respond like prophet Isaiah? Here I am ! send me.  Jesus tells us to “be His witnesses in Jerusalem, and Judea, and in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.  There are opportunities to serve and connect people to God by spreading His word and His love in practical ways in our community. For multitudes have experienced the complete freedom of Jesus from addictions, broken life and family problems, sicknesses and diseases.  And we sure you will share this web site with your friends and families.

Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers:Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. (Acts 13:1-3)

Final Harvest
Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe. (Revelation 14:15)

"After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb"(REV7:9,14;19:9)  And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.(Rev 20:4)

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.(Revelation 19:6)
