Christian Counseling
There is only one Wonderful Counselor, and our purpose as human counselors is to bring people into His Presence where He will heal their heart. Become a minister of grace and reconciliation by leading hurting people into the Presence of the Wonderful Counselor. When they hear His words of life and see Him actively working to fulfill His purposes for them, they will be healed and their lives will be transformed.
Christian Counseling: The Role of Counselors
Why Do People Need Counselors?
We can simply answer the question about why people need counselors. -- They have problems.
The Role of Counselors in Helping People with Their Problems
Which of the following responses would you choose?
People need counselors to tell them how to solve their problems.
People need counselors to let them talk about their problems.
People need counselors to help them solve their problems.
If you chose "A", consider this:
Counseling needs to be more than the giving of advice. To always use a directive approach is to foster a dependency on you as a counselor. A person needs to learn to think on his/her own. A person needs to learn how to find God's solutions and not merely be told what God's solutions are. What will the counselee do if you, or another advice-giver, are not available? - Probably he/she will fall deeper into despair and a crisis will ensue.
If you chose "B", consider this:
While talking about one's problems can be therapeutic, people need more than a release of their feelings. They need God's perspective. They need to develop healthy life management skills that will enable them to deal more effectively with the problem and possibly prevent its reoccurrence in the future.
If you chose "C":
People need to resolve their problems, not just talk about them. How much more effective it is if the counselor takes on the role of a facilitator, guide, or catalyst rather than a dictator or manipulator. The best way to teach people healthy life management skills is walking them through the process of discovering God's solution rather than telling them all they need to know.
What should be the counselor's objective?
The objective of the counselor ought to be to work himself out of a job. The counselor should work with people in such a way as to encourage personal discovery of the truth about their situation and personal responsibility in planning a solution to their problem. In so doing, the counselor is a teacher, training people to develop healthy life management skills. As the counselor helps people work through their current situation by merely guiding or facilitating the process, people learn for the future. People are more likely to change because they own the solution, not simply told what to do.
the counselee's need for help
The first and foremost objective a Christian counselor should have for the people he counsels is that they grow into a deeper relationship with the Lord. Helping people reach their potential in Christ is the ultimate end toward which all counseling should lead . . . to live that full, abundant life Christ came to give them (John 10:10), to live productive, fruitful lives (John 15:1-8). In a real sense, a counselor is a discipler.
the solution to the counselee's problem
"There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." (Prov. 14:12) -- Humanistic solutions yield temporary and long-range ineffective results. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." (Prov. 9:10) -- The application of godly wisdom yields deep-seated and lasting change.
This doesn't invalidate the field of psychology. There is natural revelation in which God uses what He made to teach men truth about Himself (Ps. 19:1-6; Rom. 1:18-20). And, there is divine revelation in the form of God's inspired Word which was written for our instruction to equip us (Rom. 15:4; 2 Tim. 3:16-17). Truth, regardless of the source, is useful. God's Word, however, is the only infallible source. Scripture is the final authority. The objective then should be to filter other sources through the grid of Scripture to discern what is truth and what isn't.
Christian Counseling: Techniques for Pastoral, Lay, and Peer Counselors
Training Category: People Helping Ministry
There are two poles in counseling methodology used by Christians:
Directive: The counselor basically tells or advises the person about what to do. The counselor assumes more of a dominant role using the Word of God as the source of authority. Confrontation, challenge, and admonishment tend to characterize this approach.
Non-Directive: The counselor guides the counselee in coming up with his/her own solutions to problems by reflecting on what the counselee says and feels. The counselor is more of a facilitator than an initiator. For this reason it has been called a client-centered approach. Encouragement, support, and empathy characterize this approach.
Which approach, or technique, should be used in Christian counseling?
Taken to their extremes, the directive approach can be judgmental and too assuming and the non-directive approach can be humanistic and existential. While each model has its limitations, they both can contribute greatly to the counseling setting.
Balance may be the better approach wherein the counselor does not get locked into one style. Care must be taken not to fall into a cookie-cutter approach. View each person as an individual and each situation as unique. What may be needed to help one person may be useless or even harmful for the next person.
And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle (directive), encourage the timid (non-directive), help the weak (mostly non-directive), be patient with everyone. (1 Thess. 5:14)
Christian Counseling - Helping People Progress
Why do people stop moving forward in resolving their problems?
Usually when a person stops taking the necessary stops to progress, something is blocking them.
What can Christian Counselors do you to help people progress?
The counselor must identify what is blocking the person from moving forward. These issues must be resolved before they are able to continue making progress.
Common blockages include:
need motivation: When a certain behavior is perceived to be meeting a need, it is difficult to let go. People usually do not hold on unless they are getting something out of it. Why do abused women keep going back into an abusive situation? What they fear they will lose surpasses what they must put up with. The counselor must work with the counselee to understand a better source for having the need met .... in Christ.
faulty thinking: Behavior may be built on a false premise. The superstructure may make sense so it becomes hard for the person to see things differently. But, their belief system was built on the wrong foundation. People sometimes believe lies they were told as a child or that came out of a traumatic experience. Some will believe their worth is based on performance. Some will believe they are no longer useful to God because of what has happened to them. The lies must be identified and taken captive in Christ. Erroneous thinking must be changed to biblical thinking. Help the counselee identify the lie and replace it with truth.
spiritual issue: Perhaps the counselee is not a believer and therefore does not have the Spirit of God within to empower him to change. Perhaps the counselee is a believer but is hardened to God. The person may be angry with God for hurts he experienced. Guilt may be overtaking him for sin he has committed and he is unable to understand God's forgiveness. Perhaps the person's view of God is too small and therefore he finds it hard to trust Him explicitly. The counselor must help the counselee understand how great God is and the role of grace not just for salvation but also for daily living. Titus 2:11 says, "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age."
So You Want to Become a Christian Counselor!
What must I do to become a Christian counselor?
As in any pursuit, here are two very important steps:
Bathe it in prayer. What is God’s desire for you? – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight”.
As you are praying, learn as much as you can about it. Sometimes the more you know, the more that passion grows.
You also need to determine where you want to go with it, how you want to use it. Do you want to become a professional counselor or do you want to do lay or peer counseling, perhaps as a ministry in your church?
This should become clearer as you invest prayer into it and gain a greater understanding of counseling.
Some put it under the umbrella of discipleship.
At minimum, you should refer to your counseling as “lay counseling” and not just “counseling” so as to denote that you are not doing this as a professional.
Let's help people in and because of the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. Here get practically involved in meeting people's needs through practical assistance, comforting the bereaved, counseling, crisis intervention, and providing support.
Spiritual Gifts in a Lay Counselor
While we can can be involved in counseling others as we live out the one another commands of Scripture, there are those who are gifted to come alongside of people in a more concerted or intentional way. People with the gift of exhortation may find themselves in this role more than those without that gift.
Qualities in a Good Lay Counselor
warmth
genuineness
ability to empathize
ability to listen
confidentiality
Any believer fulfilling the one another commands of Scripture not only can, but will be a counsellor
admonish one another . . . bear one another’s burdens . . . build up one another . . . care for one another . . . comfort one another . . . confess faults to one another . . . encourage one another . . . spur one another on
As a Spirit- anointed counselor, you will minister heart to heart and see lifetime bondages quickly broken and lives radically changed. You will have the great joy of participating in Christ’s work of setting the captives free!

Faith is more than religion. It's about a relationship between a person and God. Together, we make faith worth living.
PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE
When a person is born again, a divine nature is added to his already existing human nature. Producing after its own kind, that is taking on the nature and the characteristics of its parents or parent. is a principle established by God at creation, It is a universal Law of Nature. Genesis chapter 1.
Therefore, when a person is born-again he becomes a partaker of the Divine Nature since he takes on the nature and character, the likeness of God who birthed him.
WE, THEN, ARE CHILDREN OF GOD, through the miracle of the new birth. We who have been born again have been recreated in the image of our Father. He who is the great I am, the creator of this universe, the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the King of kings - IS OUR FATHER!
TO BE PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE MEANS:
YOU ARE A NEW CREATION, a new being, having a new life, you have a new birth, you are an entirely new person; just as Adam and Eve were originally created in the image of God, so in the new creation, you have been recreated after the image of God in righteousness and true holiness; being made a partaker of the divine nature; being like Jesus in this world.
OLD THINGS HAVE PASSED AWAY - Because Jesus took upon Himself every sin which we have committed or will ever commit, being condemned in the flesh, and paying the penalty of death for those sins; and since when a person by faith receives Jesus Christ as his Savior he is born again with a new nature, the old nature (old man) having passed away, being dead and buried with Christ - there is therefore, no condemnation for sin, since in the new birth according to his new nature he cannot commit sin. And since, there Is now NO SIN to condemn, there Is no guilt and condemnation of sin.
THE BONDAGE OF SIN HAS PASSED AWAY - The person who is not born again because of his sin nature is a slave to sin. He is in bondage to sin and can do nothing but sin. He is a sinner because his nature is sin. the person who is born again because he has the nature of God is not a sinner and therefore is freed from SIN.Therefore, being freed from sin also releases him from the bondage of sin. Sin is no longer his master---he is free. As the Bible says, He whom the Son sets free is free indeed.
WHO ARE YOU? WHAT IS YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST JESUS IF YOU HAVE BEEN BORN AGAIN?
- you are a child of God, being born of God;
- you are a partaker of the Divine nature;
- you are as Jesus is;
- you are an entirely new creation, being re-created in the image of God in righteousness and true holiness.
